Club Championship: the night of the 2k time trial

After a disrupted couple of years (looking at you, Covid-19!), the Club Championship is getting back on track. Literally! Wednesday 2 March saw the latest event – a 2k time trial on the track. With four separate waves, there was a chance for everyone to test themselves or just take part in the free, timed event.

The evening was only made possible by the contribution of volunteers, many of whom fitted in roles around their own warm up and races. The club is really grateful to everyone who helped, whether that was bringing race numbers, sorting out pins, registering runners, making sure everyone did five laps (neither more nor less!), as well as the all important time-keeping, finish funnel and results service. Special mention to Louise Muteham, whose best “teacher voice” ensured that everyone was in the right place at the right time, and Dave Westley, whose “3,2,1 GO” kicked off every race (although his mention of a steward’s inquiry into the rather eager start of Race 4 was not popular!)

The evening saw some impressive efforts across the full range of groups. To anyone who’s ever wondered how hard Junior parkrun can actually be … we now know how hard a 2k effort can feel. Results can be found HERE.

Finally, the evening ended with a presentation to those who had won various prizes at the Lliswerry 8: special mention here to Sandy Chipper, Lizzie Dimond, Richard Jones and Jon Belcher, as well as the victorious Lliswerry Ladies team of Emma Wookey, Nicky Collin, Sandy Chipper and Lizzie Dimond. We’d also seen an earlier presentation to Debbie Moran for all her hard work in organising the race – cheers, Debbie!

Next up in the Club Championship is the Newport Half Marathon on 6 March 2022 where we’re expecting a big turnout from the club. Good luck and don’t forget to smile (or pull a face) for the cameras.
